~ After the First Crusade captured Jerusalem in 1099, many Christian pilgrims traveled to visit what they referred to as the Holy Places. However, though the city of Jerusalem was under relatively secure control, the rest of the Outremer was not. Bandits abounded, and pilgrims were routinely slaughtered, sometimes by the hundreds, as they attempted to make the journey from the coastline at Jaffa into the Holy Land.

Around 1119, two veterans of the First Crusade, the French knight Hugues de Payens and his relative Godfrey de Saint-Omer, proposed the creation of a monastic order for the protection of these pilgrims. King Baldwin II of Jerusalem agreed to their request, and gave them space for a headquarters on the Temple Mount, in the captured Al Aqsa Mosque. The Temple Mount had a mystique, because it was above what was believed to be the ruins of the Temple of Solomon. The Crusaders therefore referred to the Al Aqsa Mosque as Solomon's Temple, and it was from this location that the Order took the name of Poor Knights of Christ and the Temple of Solomon, or "Templar" knights. The Order, with about nine knights, had few financial resources and relied on donations to survive. Their emblem was of two knights riding on a single horse, emphasizing the Order's poverty.

A nobleman who was interested in participating in the Crusades might place all his assets under Templar management while he was away. Accumulating wealth in this manner throughout Christendom and the Outremer, the Order in 1150 began generating letters of credit for pilgrims journeying to the Holy Land: pilgrims deposited their valuables with a local Templar preceptory before embarking, received a document indicating the value of their deposit, then used that document upon arrival in the Holy Land to retrieve their funds. This innovative arrangement was an early form of banking, and may have been the first formal system to support the use of cheques; it improved the safety of pilgrims by making them less attractive targets for thieves, and also contributed to the Templar coffers.

The Templars' impoverished status did not last long. With its clear mission and ample resources, the Order grew rapidly. Templars were often the advance force in key battles of the Crusades, as the heavily armoured knights on their warhorses would set out to charge at the enemy, in an attempt to break opposition lines. One of their most famous victories was in 1177 during the Battle of Montgisard, where some 500 Templar knights helped to defeat Saladin's army of more than 26,000 soldiers.

Based on this mix of donations and business dealing, the Templars established financial networks across the whole of Christendom. They acquired large tracts of land, both in Europe and the Middle East; they bought and managed farms and vineyards; they built churches and castles; they were involved in manufacturing, import and export; they had their own fleet of ships; and at one point they even owned the entire island of Cyprus. The Order of the Knights Templar arguably qualifies as the world's first multinational corporation.

The Knights Templar were occasionally at odds with the two other Christian military orders, the Knights Hospitaller and the Teutonic Knights, and decades of internecine feuds weakened Christian positions, politically and militarily.

In 1305, the new Pope Clement V, based in France, sent letters to both the Templar Grand Master Jacques de Molay and the Hospitaller Grand Master Fulk de Villaret to discuss the possibility of merging the two Orders. Neither was amenable to the idea, but Pope Clement persisted, and in 1306 he invited both Grand Masters to France to discuss the matter. De Molay arrived first in early 1307, but de Villaret was delayed for several months. While waiting, De Molay and Clement discussed charges that had been made two years prior by an ousted Templar. It was generally agreed that the charges were false, but Clement sent King Philip IV of France a written request for assistance in the investigation. King Philip was already deeply in debt to the Templars from his war with the English and decided to seize upon the rumors for his own purposes. He began pressuring the Church to take action against the Order, as a way of freeing himself from his debts.

On Friday, October 13, 1307 (a date sometimes incorrectly linked with the origin of the Friday the 13th superstition) Philip ordered de Molay and scores of other French Templars to be simultaneously arrested. The Templars were charged with numerous offenses (including apostasy, idolatry, heresy, "obscene rituals" and homosexuality, corruption and fraud, and secrecy). Many of the accused confessed to these charges under torture, and these confessions, even though obtained under duress, caused a scandal in Paris. After more bullying from Philip, Pope Clement then issued the papal bull Pastoralis Praeeminentiae on November 22, 1307, which instructed all Christian monarchs in Europe to arrest all Templars and seize their assets.

Pope Clement called for papal hearings to determine the Templars' guilt or innocence, and once freed of the Inquisitors' torture, many Templars recanted their confessions. Some had sufficient legal experience to defend themselves in the trials, but in 1310 Philip blocked this attempt, using the previously forced confessions to have dozens of Templars burned at the stake in Paris.

With Philip threatening military action unless the Pope complied with his wishes, Pope Clement finally agreed to disband the Order, citing the public scandal that had been generated by the confessions. At the Council of Vienne in 1312, he issued a series of papal bulls, including Vox in excelso, which officially dissolved the Order, and Ad providam, which turned over most Templar assets to the Hospitallers.

As for the leaders of the Order, the elderly Grand Master Jacques de Molay, who had confessed under torture, retracted his statement. His associate Geoffrey de Charney, Preceptor of Normandy, followed de Molay's example and insisted on his innocence. Both men were declared guilty of being relapsed heretics, and they were sentenced to burn alive at the stake in Paris on March 18, 1314. De Molay reportedly remained defiant to the end, asking to be tied in such a way that he could face the Notre Dame Cathedral and hold his hands together in prayer. According to legend, he called out from the flames that both Pope Clement and King Philip would soon meet him before God. Pope Clement died only a month later, and King Philip died in a hunting accident before the end of the year.

With the last of the Order's leaders gone, the remaining Templars around Europe were either arrested and tried under the Papal investigation (with virtually none convicted), absorbed into other military orders such as the Knights Hospitaller, or pensioned and allowed to live out their days peacefully. Some may have fled to other territories outside Papal control, such as excommunicated Scotland or to Switzerland. Templar organizations in Portugal simply changed their name, from Knights Templar to Knights of Christ.

In 2001, a document known as the "Chinon Parchment" was found in the Vatican Secret Archives, apparently after having been filed in the wrong place in 1628. It is a record of the trial of the Templars and shows that Clement absolved the Templars of all heresies in 1308 before formally disbanding the Order in 1312.

It is currently the Roman Catholic Church position that the medieval persecution of the Knights Templar was unjust; that there was nothing inherently wrong with the Order or its Rule; and that Pope Clement was pressured into his actions by the magnitude of the public scandal and the dominating influence of King Philip IV.

With their military mission and extensive financial resources, the Knights Templar funded a large number of building projects around Europe and the Holy Land. Many of these structures are still standing. Many sites also maintain the name "Temple" because of centuries-old association with the Templars. For example, some of the Templars' lands in London were later rented to lawyers, which led to the names of the Temple Bar gateway and the Temple tube station. Two of the four Inns of Court which may call members to act as barristers are the Inner Temple and Middle Temple.

Distinctive architectural elements of Templar buildings include the use of the image of "two knights on a single horse", representing the Knights' poverty, and round buildings designed to resemble the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem.

This has proven effective in windows Vista.

Find the df2.exe in your install directory. Right click, --> Properties and in the Compatability tab check "run this program in campatability mode for windows XP service pack 2".

I have heard this question asked a number of times so I thought I would post the solution on the board for those that are interested in increasing the in game resolution. Increasing your resolution only works if your hardware(video card) supports a higher resolution.

You will need to look in your game directory folder. Normaly C:/programs/Nova Logic/Delta Force 2

Find a file called df2.cfg. Open it with note pad or some other word editor. This file is your Delta Force 2 game configuration file.

Find the line that says "game_res" and you should see a number beside it from 1 to 5.

Change the number as follows for the resolution you want.

1 is 320x240 mode
2 is 400x300 mode
3 is 512x384 mode
4 is 640x480 mode
5 is 800x600 mode
6 is 1024x768 mode
7 is 1280x960 mode

Have fun!!

This is proven effective in windows 2000. I have not tried it in xp but since the operating systems are very similar it may be workable.

I have been searching for a couple of months for a fix. The issue was in joining a server on Nova World and the lobby locking up. I finally found an answer that worked great for me. It goes as follows:

Go to Control Panel - Sound - Audio - Advanced - Performance - then turn Hardware Acceleration down all the way to the left.

I want to give credit where credit is do, so here is the site I found this answer at. Thanks Guys.

Here is also a possible fix for game crashes:
Delete all of your PCX files in your DF2 folder and see if that helps.

I had an issue with wanting to play on multiple comps on my one high speed line. I tracked down this solution and it does work if you want to run 2 machines. More than 2 would require another set of port numbers and I am not sure what those would be. But for the sake of using two machines to connect to Nova World servers the solution is:

Your first machine uses a set of ports in which to connect, by default are 3568 and 4660.
Your second machine would try to use the same set, which is why the second cannot play.

On the second machine, open df2.cfg, located in your df2 directory.
Change  mp_gameport = 0 to 3668
              mp_vonport = 0 to 4760

Check to see if your firewall allows UDP traffic on ports 3668 and 4760.

presto, chango!

Description

DF Favorites is a utility program for NovaLogic's Delta Force 2, Delta Force Land Warrior, and Delta Force Task Force Dagger games. It includes the following major features:

Ping game servers and keep them in lists

Join games automatically, bypassing NovaWorld

Modify your player settings and use fancy names (i.e. Ðeadßolt) including choosing weapons, messages, etc.

Remote control of game servers to ban, punt, etc.

Send game links between players/buddy lists.

Messaging support for sharing game and tool links.

Tool support, integrate your favorite tools.

Ping game servers and keep them in lists

DF Favorites can be used to keep track of game servers that you like to play in. It will provide with game information directly from the game server itself. This allows you to see various things such as game name, ping rate, number of players, game type, and dedicated server. You can sort these lists by any information that is available. This is a great way to find servers that have the lowest ping rate.

DF Favorites allows you to keep multiple lists of servers. This can be used to keep all of your Team Deathmatch servers together or simply to store servers that you visit infrequently. These lists can be exported and imported by other users of DF Favorites.

Join games automatically, bypassing NovaWorld

Favorites can help you get into a game quickly in various ways. You can join a game directly from the program and it will navigate all of the screens for you -- with just one click.

DF Favorites replaces the default startup web page used by the game with a series of pages that include all of you game servers in every list. You can choose all the games that you might want to play in and generate the list, start the game, and simply use the pages stored locally on your computer without suffering the slow page loads from NovaWorld.

DF Favorites will automatically turn itself off after you get into the game. There is no need to alt-tab back and shut it down. It knows you need the memory for gaming.

DF Favorites restore the startup page after you automatically join a game. There is no need to start up the program again just to get rid of the last game you joined. It will automatically generate pages that contain all of your servers stored in easy to navigate pages.

Is the game you want to join full? DF Favorites makes joining full servers easy. When a server is full you simply click a checkbox beside the server and it will automatically join that server when a slot is available. It can do this since it will ping the server every few seconds (you control how frequently) and as soon as it notices a slot it will start the join action.

Modify your player settings and use fancy names

DF3 Favorites can be used to build fancy names for hosting your servers or your player names. It also does this safely so that your statistics are not wiped out. It includes a very simple editor that allows you to choose the characters to include in your name and will automatically update your player files with the fancy name.

Annoyed that you can't use another player slot when starting a game. With DF Favorites you can. With the player editor you can change the order of the players that are listed in the player file. This works for Delta Force 2, Delta Force Land Warrior, and Delta Force Task Force Dagger.

DF Favorites player editor allows allows you change the vast majority of settings about your player. This includes every weapon and all of you quick messages. You can do this before starting a game. There is no need to jump into a NO SAWS server. You can check your weapons before start the game and adjust them on the spot.

Remote control of game servers to ban, punt, etc.

Have you ever been in your squad server, a player is cheating or misbehaving, and the host is off doing other things (can you say argh!)? How about having a TDM server and wanting to switch it to a TKOTH server? Do you need something simple that works for Delta Force 2, Delta Force Land Warrior, and Delta Force Task Force Dagger?

DF Favorites includes everything you need to allow your squad members or friends to assume a pre-defined level of control over your server. If you host a server all you need to do before you walk away is start up the included Command and Control Server and it will allow anyone you have defined access permissions to connect and perform a variety of activities on your game. Using the DF Favorites Manage Server command allows them to connect and perform all the activities as if they were there. All with a simple to graphical interface.

Send game links between players/buddy lists.

What page is that game on? What was the name of that game? How many times have you ICQ'd or said that over your voice software? If you are frustrated with doing this then you should use DF Favorites. It includes a variety of ways to share your game links with your buddies.

DF Favorites includes a buddy system that you can use to establish a list of players that you can share game links with. It does not matter whether these users are online or offline. When you send a game link to another user it will either be sent directly to them or sent to the Favorites World server and delivered the next time the user starts DF Favorites.

When you first run DF Favorites it will ask you to choose a display name and password. This will register you on the Favorites World servers. From there you can then add and remove buddies that you plan on sharing game links. When someone adds you to their buddy list you are sent a message that allows you to authorize them or reject the request. This lets you keep your online status contained to only those users that you wish.

DF Favorites integrates with Favorites World to allow you to find other game users quickly and easily. Search for users either by User ID or by a portion of their Display Names. If the players are on a squad, it is easier, search for their squad tags and and all the squad at once.

DF Favorites also supports sending game links in a couple of other ways. If you have ICQ 2000b or greater then you can send a game link to users that are online. This is not as nice as using the Favorites World service but it works for those that wish to use it. You can also copy a game link reference and send it however you wish. This link will contain the Nova Key that can then be used by the other user to add the game.

Messaging support for sharing game and tool links.

DF Favorites provides integrated messaging that gives you the power to send and receive game links, tool links, web links, and small messages. This service works whether your buddies are online or offline. Send that BattleCom or Roger Wilco link to your friends and then can quickly join your voice server. All using the same tool that you use to send game links back and forth.

Tool support, integrate your favorite tools.

DF Favorites automatically detects BattleCom and Roger Wilco, making them available from the new Tools menu. You don't need to search your desktop or start menu for these tools anymore.

DF Favorites gives you the ability to add your favorite tools to the user-customizable Tools menu. Add your favorite tools and have them just a click away.

This site has alot of mixed terrains. Thing is, I believe if the users don't have the terrains they can't play. Which sucks but, wow what great maps they make.

I Have not used this utility so not sure how it works. Hard to tell if you would place trees before or after you place objects, to avoid trees within objects or vise versa.
